Pryor Garnett: about 65 acres planted in Western WA, trying two varieties this year – Lightning (developed by OSU) and Calypso, growing Triticale, interested in local grain shed.
Joel Huesby: organic farmer near Walla Walla with 400 acres, a organic value added processor, grows many grains, and malts all the grain grown, has a flower mill and a grain dryer.
Bill Myers from Joseph’s Grainery is a great resource for grain generally, and specifically for seed saving and dealing with VNS crops.
Jessica Moon: Moon Family Farm – SE WA near the Tri Cities. Have wheat and spelt in the ground currently – seeded native grasslands as well. Considering planting teff.
Matt Hoffman: Cofounder of Westland Distillery – makes only single malt whiskey in Seattle. Currently sourcing most of their grain from Washington, with goals to source ALL from in-state soon. They are heavily invested in a regional grain economy.
Angela Kora: baker and miller in the tri-cities area – one of the owners of Ethos Baking – have been doing in-house milling since they opened 10 years ago. Bakers in the area are slower to invest in whole grains.
Eleanor Reagan: Works for the Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative, who work on food sovereignty and food access initiatives in their region. Large focus on sustainable and just staple food sourcing.
Colette DePhelps: Inland Northwest Artisan Grains experience. Likely held July 7th & 8th. Very interested in a focus on climate resiliency.

Mark: SPSCC – SPSCC SPSCC distilling and brewing program – Mark is new and excited to be here.
Steven Lee: Plant Materials Center in Pullman. They do lots of crop tests and trials – encouraging collaborations with farmers!
Shagbark Seed and Mill makes tortillas, among other things!
Nathaneal Siemens: , grower and representative of Rodale Consulting that helps clients with a variety of organic-focused changes and processes.
Nicholas Martel – works for Heritage Distilling and is a student in the SPSCC distilling and brewing program. Interested in making baiju and wondering if anyone is dealing much with sorghum.
Cascadia Grains October 6th, 2021 Regional Call
This quarter’s Regional Call featured a presentation by Bob Brueggeman, WSU Associate Professor, Barley Breeding/ Molecular Genetics. Bob discussed the new WSU malt barley quality lab, as well as current malt barley and food barley breeding efforts targeted for the craft malting, distilling and food barley industries.
